Users response to Banner Adverstising

I have often wondered how many users actually respond to Internet advertising ploys.  Using the Internet to research products or even find the best price is a great tool for consumers.   But what role or how big a role does the Internet advertising play in creating new sales or more brand awareness.

An article written by Mike Sachoff on WebProNews speaks on the response to banner ads.
He finds that "Nearly half of Internet users who respond to display advertising eventually do a search related to the ad they viewed, according to a new study from iProspect."  This new study found the following information:

31% respond by directly clicking on the ad
27% respond by searching the product or brand
21% respond by typing the company web address and visiting directly
9% respond by using social media

So I ask you, how do you respond to Internet advertising?  I personally respond by search the brand or product or going directly to the company website.  Mainly I do this due to security of computer.  I have a fear of false advertisements or viruses in form of advertisements.  So I feel safer searching the product to make sure legit and then visiting the website.

But, I want to see how everyone else responds to display advertising.

  1. For the most part, I find Internet advertising very annoying. It seems no matter when or how long I am on the Web, the pop-ups start coming. I ignore them but still they come! It is obvious to me that my activities and interests are being studied because the ads that I see are eerily similar to place I've just visited or products I have purchased in the recent past.
I understand that this is how some companies generate revenue, but the ads just get in my way and slow me down.
If I want to purchase something online, I just visit the company website directly. Taking that route feels more secure that clicking on some random flashing ad.
I doubt there will ever be a day when we will not be bothered by Internet ads, much the same way that we must endure commercials during our favorite TV program. (Now, if the Internet ads were anything like the Super Bowl commercials, they would be worth watching!)
It will be interesing to see what the future brings with Internet adverstising. One thing for sure is that the ads aren't going away anytime soon.

    1. I agree I typically see ad but go to company's website to order. I feel it is more secure or safer to do so. Thanks!

  2. I agree with Sarah in that most internet ads are quite annoying. I don't think they are as annoying as they once were with the addition of pop-up blockers.

If I am on a site that I trust, lets say, ebay, then yes, I will just click on the ad and let it take me where ever. Sometimes I do look some companies up on google to verify the validity of their ads. For the most part though, I just ignore the ads, its usually something I'm not interested in or it is something that I may want but just don't need.

  3. I typically do not click on banner ads. I worry about viruses. I really don't like the ones that expand into a commercial. It takes so long to close out of them so that you can read an article on CNN.

Sometimes online advertising gets me to visit a site that I was not thinking about. If I am shopping and I notice a related site advertised it might remind me to go and look at that store's website. So in that sense they do work sometimes.

  4. Typically I ignore the ads also in case of viruses and I would directly to the site if unwanted more info, to prevent virius and from being mislead. One thing I never understand about the ads is sometimes even when I click the "close" button it still reroutes me to the website.

  5. I personally never respond to banner advertising, I usually ignore them as all advertising blends in to me as garbage. However, I do think it's a smart move for companies trying to bring in new customers because the ads pop up right in their face. Sometimes a user may accidentally tap on the banner ad and it ends up being something that the person is interested in.
