Like most women, we have all heard of Pinterest. I personally feel I might have an addiction to just see what is out there, how to everything, and look for funny or inspirational quotes. But, I have never really thought about Pinterest as an internet advertising forum. Well if you haven't you either than believe me it is coming. Based on statistics of purchases and amount of re-pins, Pinterest is generating a lot of buzz.
Pinterest by the Numbers
Pinterest's traffic increased by a staggering 5,124% from 2011 to 2012! What also has advertisers foaming at the mouth is that Pinterest buyers tend to spend more and purchase at greater frequencies than users from the other top 5 major social sites. And traffic from Pinterest produces 4x the revenue-per click than Twitter. Pinterest reportedly generates 17% of Shopify's entire social media-driven revenue.
So is Pinterest next to be invaded by internet advertising or has it already happened? I go on pinterest either looking for something specific or just searching what is popular. But, when I see something I like..it can be hard to find where to find the item to purchase. I just pinned a pretty lipstick color. Said it was made by NYX and sold at Ulta or Target. So, hey I was in Ulta this weekend..and thought what the heck, let's see if I can find it. Nope! I searched through every lipstick for color name given in Pin. But, I had no idea how hold the pin was. It could very well be last year's color.
I can see Pinterest being phenomenal for internet advertisers to tailor to your preferences but how will it work?
I think you make a great point about advertising on Pinterest. It is the perfect place to place small, unobtrusive ads into galleries. The advertisers could target placing ads on certain pages using key words from the gallery title or image names that are pinned. You could have millions of advertiser and charge them based on how often their ad was pinned onto a gallery that someone was looking at. Another thing Pintrest could do would be to offer to pin coupons on peoples pages. All you need to do is give them some information about your interests and it becomes a win-win. The advertisers can more specifically target future customers and consumers gain possible discounts on things they might purchase.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of coupons!
DeletePinterest can be the perfect place to advertise. With every re-pin and adding ideas on your page there are companies willing to pay for that information. I do not know how I feel about handing over my interest like that. I believe if a company can manipulate you to turn a profit they will do it. But if they are sending me personalize advertisement I might buy something cool or unique that I wouldn't normally buy.

If it is going to save me money on things I already buy then I am for it. Pininterest now has secret boards that only you can view...so you can still keep some stuff private.
DeleteI think pinterest is best advertizing method, at the same time very addictive. When I first sign up for pintrest, I used to share inspiration or funny quotes. Then I found out all the great accessories, shoes and more stuff they offer. Most of the product has reviews and opinions of others, which help you to know more about the item. When you click on the product will take you to the actual retailer website. This is the best way to bring customer to your website to shop.
ReplyDeleteI agree I might have a Pininterest addiction!
DeleteI love pinterest. I am not very creative, so if I ever need ideas for gift or decorating or fashion I always reference pinterest! I never really thought of it as an advertising sight but I think that it is the perfect venue for advertising. Why not? This is where people go to get ideas. Why wouldn't you use this forum for advertising. I think it would work really well. On the other hand, although it would be a good place for companies to advertise. I like it because it is a crafty place. Its about creating things and coming up with new ideas and I, personally, would hate for it to become commercialized. I think that if you just advertise something and say, "you can get it at [such-n-such]" it takes away from the innovation and creativity of the site.
ReplyDeletePininterst would be good for people starting their own business. Their crafty ideas turn a profit. Similiar to esty.
DeleteI completely agree here that I never really would have thought about Pinterest being a way of advertising. Why not though? I am like most of you all and go on there for ideas. Someone is putting them on there and they are getting in some where down the line. I think it's a great way to advertise and get a lot of ideas out there.
ReplyDeletePinterest definitely generates enough users to provide advertisers with a varied audience. The only issue I could foresee is will users cut back on their use if they start having to deal with advertisements? I don't know about everyone else but, part of the appeal of Pinterest is its simplicity; the fact that you don't have to deal with alot of the clutter that other social media sites have. Advertisements at every turn may just be obnoxious and turn people away, but then again maybe not. At this point maybe we are are just so use to seeing them that it may have no effect on the users.
ReplyDeleteEven if they didn't have ads. The information and profiles with wants and likes is an explosion of marketing potential.
DeleteI have never tried this site. A lot of my female friends on facebook seem to have an interest in it. Is this site geared mainly toward women? You have piqued my curiosity. I just may have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteThe main audience is women..but there is something there for everyone!
DeleteI am not familiar at all with pintrest but I am also not surprised to see things like this pop up. The rate of change at which business is moving just continuous to increase in my opinion. Where ten and twenty years ago the issue was things like the post office surviving email now I think the issue is what it going to replace facebook. All jokes aside, internet business demand is primarily driven by teenagers and young adults who at an increasing rate are using things like Pinterest instead of the old social media.
ReplyDeleteI agree much younger audience driving internet business. But my Mom is getting much more acquainted with more than just solitaire on her ipad. She orders online and is getting into apps. She is in her 70's.
DeleteI was really impressed by the percentage amount increase from 2011 to 2012 of people that use the site. Although I should not be surprised because Pinterest just popped up one day and everyone starting talking about it like wildfire. The site is so unique and there is nothing else out there to compare to it. Pinterest and revenue go hand in hand so I understand how this type of social media produces more as well. If most people are like me I use the site to get new ideas and how will have to use money once I find the idea. As far as internet advertising being used on Pinterest, I do not think the idea is too farfetched. A product that gets pinned once will soon be seen by thousands in a matter of no time.
ReplyDeleteI love to go on Pinterest and view popular. i believe that is usually the most pinned items of the day.
DeleteI think Pinterest has become a great place to advertise to the woman audience. Women all the time are strolling through Pinterest for ideas and creations. Companies can use this platform for their personal gain, for instance of they use their products in innovative ideas on Pinterest, the viewer interested in utilizing that idea will probably go out and buy the same products used on Pinterest to match.
ReplyDeleteI have a Relay for Life board that me and my co captain of our team can share ideas and see what we are visualizing for our team tent. So, good to share ideas, info and bday or christmas ideas. Kind of like a visual wish list!
DeleteI LOVE pinterest! check it mostly everyday...made tons of recipes that ive found in the site, painted my striped wall just like some decorated pin I saw... yea I'm a fan. At my job I do part of the internet marketing, and just started using Pinterest to advertise. It's going well, we have a lot of repins and I hope those turn in to leads. It is too early to know, but I have high hopes.

I see Thirty One products on the side and would love to advertise on Pinintest since it is mostly my target market.
DeleteI really like Pinterest! There are several things about Pinterest that I love. For my baby shower, my best friend and I made my personal Pinterest board, we took (pinned it) a lot of great ideas that help us to come up with a beautiful baby shower. For example, I pinned a nice carriage cake pic that I want to be made it. This is a great topic!!! I thought about Pinterest as my next blog post, I'm glad that you did it!!!
ReplyDeleteLove Pinterest and happened upon the article.
